Damaged Engine Block Repair - RA Power Solutions

A diesel power plant in South America, operating Wartsila 12V32 and Wartsila 18V32 generator sets, recently contacted RA Power Solutions for support.

A serious accident occurred due to a cylinder liner failure, causing extensive damage to several parts, including the upper and lower engine blocks of the Wartsila 18V32 engine. RA Power Solutions’ technicians investigated the issue and found that both engine blocks had multiple severe cracks totaling 2900 mm, along with broken casting pieces measuring 300 × 460 mm.

After evaluating different solutions, replacing the upper and lower crankcases was considered, but it was extremely expensive and would take about nine months for delivery. Instead, RA Power Solutions suggested repairing the cracks and damaged areas using metal stitching and metal locking, a cold repair process. This method has been successfully used by our technicians in numerous installations worldwide over the past 45 years.

On-Site Repairs for Faster Results

Our technicians carefully studied the damaged areas of the engine block and fitted a new casting piece with metallurgical properties matching the original material. They then repaired all the cracks using modern metal stitching locks and keys. With the help of advanced MPI equipment, every crack was precisely located and fixed using the metal stitching and metal locking method.

After the accident also damaged the crankshaft, RA Power Solutions carried out on-site crankshaft grinding and reassembled the engine in just 16 days. All repairs were completed on-site using portable equipment brought to the location.

RA Power Solutions is proud to share that, over the past 45 years, we have helped our clients save millions of dollars by repairing damaged parts on-site, avoiding the high cost and long wait times of new components.
